Gas Drilling and Air Quality

April 17, 2011

Fort Worth City Council Election - Air Quality

The City of Fort Worth’s air quality study has been wrought with problems.  The Star-Telegram reported, “It may be an inherent conflict of interest to allow gas company employees to serve on committees that oversee their industry, the city’s Ethics Review Committee.” The air quality study is both late and over-budget.  Tarrant County has an EPA “serious nonattainment area” designation.

There are parts of beautiful Wyoming that has an air quality worse than Los Angeles attributable to gas drilling.  We want to improve and keep our air quality clean.

In October 2009, the Fort Worth League of Neighborhoods was awarded a $48,000 technical assistance grant form the U.S. Department of Transportation, Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration. Download their full report on the gas pipelines study.

My political opponent, Dennis Shingleton, who is anointed by the Downtown Crowd, PACs and Special Interest Groups hasn’t said anything on the record about air quality or safety.  I guess Dennis Shingleton’s position is “Business As Usual”. After all Carter Burdette was a big oil and gas supporter.  In that same Fort Worth Weekly article Dennis Shingleton said, “I would not have run if Carter Burdette had decided to run, because he has done a superb job.”

It would be my position on the Fort Worth City Council that these top three priorities be implemented as a very minimum:

1. Zero emissions from the gas wells. Emissions would be monitored remotely by the operators and at their expense.

2. Use thermal imaging (infrared) camera systems, which help spot leaks in tanks, pipelines and facilities to improve safety.

3. All Air Quality analysts and consultants should be independent third parties that are not part of the gas drilling industry to reduce any conflict of interest.

We cannot take chances with families and children.  Vote for transparency.  Vote for safety.  Vote for Jon Perry.
